which filter/regulator to buy?

Postby bashkin » Thu Mar 05, 2009 3:33 am

Hi:

I am looking for suggestions on which air filter/regulator to buy for my spray booth. I have an 80 gal/ 5 hp compressor (no air dryer) and am running about 50 ft of 3/4" copper pipe and then about 25 ft of 1/2" before dropping into the booth. I have an LV 400. I am a guitar builder and everything I spray is, well no bigger than a guitar.

I have done some research on-line and am a bit over-whelmed with the choices. I don't want to buy junk but I am not willing to break the bank either.

I would appreciate any specific suggestions on brands and model #'s.

Thanks-

Michael

Compressed air dryer/ regulaters

Hi Michael,
Welcome to our forum and thank you for your question.
Your piping system as you discribe it is sufficient converting the water vapor to liquid and can be removed very efficiently with a Sharpe 880A or an 6950 by RTi. These filter regulators sell for around $150.00.
If you want zero dry air you'll need either a desiccant or a membrane dryer - they will be up in the $500.00 TO $ 700.00 range.

Hi Hub:

Thanks for the reply. I do have follow up questions. I looked at both the units you suggested and noticed that they have 1/4" outlet ports. Someone else had suggested that trying to maintain at high CFM is important (especially with HVLP guns) and that I should get something with 3/8" or bigger ports. Any thoughts on this?

Also is the higher cost Sharpe 6760 worth the upgrade in performance. Or if I buy the more expensive unit will I get a better results given my intended use? Or is it overkill? I am spraying clear polyurethane and lacquer.

Thanks again-
Michael

Q / THE 1/4 " OUT LET

Postby Hub » Sat Mar 07, 2009 12:50 am

Hi Michael,
The LPH400LV pulls less than 10 CFM at 16 PSI, so no worries there,
The 1/4 inch out let is no cause to worry either - for that distance the 1/4" outlet will pass several hundred CFM at 100 PSI. Big is almost always better, but in this case it isn't that important - especially if your air hose is 3/8" ID.

The only difference between the Sharpe 6950 and the 6720 is the filtering capacity 6950 will do 75 CFM and the 6720 will handle 120 CFM.

I'd go with the 6950 - save a buck or three.

Cheers,

Hub,

I am looking for a new air filter/regulator and found this... I realized it is 5 years old and would like to know if you found better one?

I found this one but the element filter has 40 micron. They have 5 micron replacement filter elements.

What do you think?

Thanks!!!

Hello DFH19,
I'd suggest you look at RTI line of filters/regulators (stealth 6060) filtering capacity down to 0.01 micron) and if you want ZERO dry compressed air - then I'd recommend a desiccant system also RTI (Eliminator II E4000) http://www.driair.com

Dale, I just moved into a new office and found myself without the literature I wanted to send so I will turn the order to the main warehouse and ask them to fill.
It will take a little longer but at lease you'll have a full packet.
